Food is a source of energy for people. Its functions don’t end there though. We also eat food for pleasure, for socialization and for getting to know a different culture. Sitting around a table, sharing news with your loved ones and tasting delicious dishes fill all human souls with happiness.

The same applies to tasting new flavors and getting to appreciate the lifestyle, preferences, and history of people from different parts of the world.

If you are going to travel to Australia, you are lucky because in this article you will find foods that you must try as long as you are there. Our list consists of snacks, main dishes, and desserts, so there is something for everyone! We also recommend that you have your own car so that it is easier to reach a supermarket, a restaurant or a bakery easily after a long day exploring around. The easiest way to hire a car that satisfies all your traveling needs is by visiting Enjoy Travel, as you can compare the available cars and complete your booking online. Having done that, you are ready to secure Australian goods!

Snacks

  1. Fairy Bread

A snack that always makes an appearance at birthday parties and it is a favorite among people in Australia and New Zealand is fairy bread. Great name, right? But what is it? It’s a slice of bread or toast, covered with butter and topped with colorful sprinkles. Aussies love this snack so much that they even have a special day for it; fairy bread is celebrated on the 24th of November every year.

  • Tim Tam

Unless at least one packet of Tim Tam is bought, a trip to the supermarket is unsuccessful. Tim Tam is a chocolate biscuit that everyone loves. The original flavor is of course chocolate-filled, but from 1964 when they were released, there have been many more fillings to choose from. The filling is always inside two malted biscuits which are covered by a layer of chocolate.

Main dishes

  1. Barbeque

Australians didn’t invent barbeque, but they surely love doing it. Snags, or most widely known as sausages, prawns, chicken, and red meat, like kangaroo or emu meat, are the prime candidates for such a culinary occasion.

  • Fish and Chips

Yes, this is a British dish that Australians have adopted by giving it their own spin. The fish makes all the difference. You will have a great variety of Australian fish to choose from; basa, flathead, and hoki are the most popular options.

Desserts

  1. Lamington

Now, desserts don’t have to be expensive in order to be worthwhile. You can’t return home without having tried lamington first. It is small squares of sponge cake covered with a thick layer of chocolate and coconut flakes.

  • Pavlova

Both Australia and New Zealand “argue” about the true origin of the delicious Pavlova. Well, all we care about is that this yummy dessert exists and you will get to try it. Pavlova is a circular cake-like dessert made of meringue and topped with whipped cream and chunks of fruit.
