I hear the jingle bells ringing! Christmas is only a few days away and I am trying to tackle all of my last minute to-do’s before it is here. We have our tree up, our presents wrapped, and our food list ready to shop, but we still have more to do. Here are a few last minute to-do’s that I am trying to accomplish, and you should too!
Finish Up Work
First of all, in order to enjoy the holidays, I want to have all of my work done ahead of time. I am trying to wrap up any work on my docket as far in advance as possible so that I can actually unwind, stress less, and enjoy my company that I am expecting. This will allow me to get last minute Christmas tasks done, as well, without having to stress over being at my computer on Christmas Eve! Spending time with family is the most important thing about the holidays, so I am really trying to take full advantage of it this year.
Water Your Tree
If you have a real tree, please do not forget to water it…and not just because it needs to stay in good shape until Christmas day is here. Having a tree in your home, with lights on it, is a huge fire hazard, especially if it is dry! I read an article from the National Fire Protection Association and they said that between 2013 and 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires that started with Christmas trees EACH year. On average, 1 of every 52 homes that were reported to have caught fire from a Christmas tree resulted in a death, which compares to an average of one death per 135 total reported home fires. This is so scary! So, yes – water your tree so that it can stay beautiful up until the big day, but please also keep that tree hydrated for your safety.
Buy Your Outfits
Are you attending Christmas parties this year? If so, you will need to get festive with your clothing choice. For example, this Little English Green Smocked Reindeer Dress is on sale right now at By George Baby and it is absolutely adorable! Located in Fair Haven, New Jersey, By George Baby is a boutique baby and toddler clothing store. They feature trusted and luxury brands such as The Beaufort Bonnet Company, The Proper Peony, Kissy Kissy, and more. They offer fall and winter options, sweaters, little girl dresses, Christening outfits, gifts (perfect for last minute gift ideas!!) and more. They have the sweetest clothing options for all of your Christmas (and beyond) needs.
Clean Out Your Fireplace
Here’s another safety precaution – clean out your fireplace before you use it. If you have already used it this year, it’s not too late to get it cleaned! And while you’re at it, have your lint trap in your dryer cleaned, as well. A lot of people plan to use their fireplace around Christmastime when everyone is gathered in the kitchen and living room, so now is a great time to have it cleaned and inspected.
Speaking of fires, make sure you do not leave your stove unattended either. Just as the leading cause of home fires are cooking fires, the leading cause of cooking fires is unattended cooking. Pay attention to what you are doing, stay in the kitchen, and if you do leave the kitchen, make sure you turn off the stove. I know that if you have been drinking or if you are really tired after a long day of work, it might be easy to turn on the stove, put your food in a pot, and walk away to sit on the couch, but don’t. If you absolutely have to leave the kitchen for a brief moment, help yourself remember to go back to the oven or stove by setting a quick timer or holding your cooking spoon in your hand.
Do Something Good
Last but not least, this is the season of giving. To do your part, please consider giving back in some way. This could be volunteering at a soup kitchen, giving blankets to those in need, or something as simple as paying for someone else’s coffee at the Starbucks window. No matter what it is, tis the season for giving back and you will feel so great doing so!
