Food has always been one of the most powerful reasons people travel. It connects you to a culture faster than any museum or guidebook ever could. In recent years, the world's appetite for culinary tourism has surged dramatically, and the numbers tell a striking story. According to UN Tourism data, international tourist receipts reached a total of $1.74 trillion in 2024, up 14% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Within that massive wave of travel, the desire to eat well ranks among the top motivations. These ten countries have earned their place at the top of the world's culinary conversation, backed by awards, rankings, and the votes of millions of passionate food travelers.

    1. Italy - The Eternal Standard of Culinary Excellence

Italy's cuisine tied for the top spot in TasteAtlas's 2024 rankings with a score of 4.65. From crispy Neapolitan pizza and creamy risottos to comforting pasta dishes like carbonara and tagliatelle al ragù, Italian food consistently delivers that unbeatable combination of rich flavors and pure comfort. The country's food culture is less a trend and more a deeply ingrained way of life. Italy remains a perennial favorite for food tourists due to its rich history, dedication to quality ingredients, and innovative chefs.

While Lisbon, Portugal, was named the best culinary city in Europe in 2024, it was Italy that won the honors for the best destination for foodies at the World Culinary Awards. The country's historical cities, world-renowned cuisine, and geographic beauty make it a popular destination for more than 40 million tourists each year. From the truffle markets of Alba to the fish markets of Sicily, Italy rewards every kind of food traveler with something genuinely unforgettable.

    2. Japan - Precision, Depth, and a City That Rules the World's Tables

Japan's cuisine tied for the top spot with Italy in TasteAtlas's 2024 rankings, and it's no surprise. Japanese food is all about precision, fresh ingredients, and perfect balance - whether it's the melt-in-your-mouth sushi, rich and comforting ramen, or crispy golden tempura. Every region of the country offers its own distinct culinary identity. Japan's largest city, Tokyo, is the center of culinary culture in Japan, and countless Tokyo restaurants serve every kind of food imaginable while the Toyosu fish market keeps restaurants stocked with the nation's finest fish.

Tokyo has been the world's top city for Michelin-starred restaurants for 18 consecutive years. The 2025 edition of the Michelin Guide Tokyo recommends a total of 507 restaurants, of which 170 starred establishments and 110 Bib Gourmand, representing 34 different types of cuisine. According to the 2024 Michelin Guide, Japan boasts 20 three-star restaurants, ranking second in the world after France. That density of excellence is something no other single country can quite match.

    3. Peru - The World's Best Restaurant and Thousands of Years of Flavor

The 2025 edition of The World's 50 Best Restaurants has just been unveiled, and it's Lima's own Maido that has captured the coveted number one spot. This marks a remarkable rise for the Nikkei cuisine pioneer, climbing from number five in 2024 to the pinnacle of global culinary recognition. The awards ceremony celebrated Maido's chef-owner, Mitsuharu "Micha" Tsumura, for his visionary approach that combines Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients. Peru has held the World Travel Awards title of World's Leading Culinary Destination consistently, having won the accolade every year from 2012 through 2025, with the sole exception of 2020 when Italy took the title.

Peru's flavor profile outlines a remarkable cross-continental map, rooted in a history of Spanish colonialism and Asian labor migration. There is even evidence to suggest that ceviche dates back to Peru's coastal regions around 2,000 years ago, when fishermen created the first iterations of the citrusy bowls of diced raw fish we know today. Lima was chosen by global editors as one of the best places to eat for 2025, and the unfussy eateries in Peru strip back all the frills to let taste do all the talking.

Hanoi's victory meant it took the top spot in the World Culinary Awards' Best Culinary City category for Asia in 2024, but the best culinary country in Asia was not Vietnam - it was Thailand. The double-Michelin-starred Mezzaluna in Bangkok also won the title of best restaurant in the world at the 2024 World Culinary Awards. Thailand's food scene effortlessly blends centuries-old street food traditions with a rapidly growing fine dining landscape. Bangkok's Potong earned the Highest New Entry Award at the 2025 World's 50 Best Restaurants, with its innovative approach to Thai-Chinese fusion cuisine securing it a place among the world's best for the first time.

Thailand is the eighth most popular tourist destination in the world, thanks in large part to its vibrant culture and mouth-watering food, receiving 35 million tourists in 2024. In 2024, the total revenue from international tourists in Thailand amounted to almost 1.7 trillion Thai baht, with Bangkok generating the highest revenue. The country's culinary draw spans every budget and preference, from ten-baht pad thai on a Bangkok corner to multi-course tasting menus in the capital's most acclaimed dining rooms.

San Sebastián is often considered Spain's culinary capital, home of the burnt Basque cheesecake, pintxos culture, and an excessive supply of Michelin-starred restaurants, but there are plenty more sunny spots on the country's tasty hit list. Etxebarri in Atxondo won runner-up at the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurants awards 2025, and though it is slotted in a rustic country house beneath Anboto mountain, its fine dining twist on flame-grilled cooking is worth the journey for any serious foodie. The country consistently ranks as one of the most-visited nations on earth, and food is a core driver of that appeal.

Spain placed second among the world's most-visited countries, recording 93.8 million arrivals based on global tourism statistics. Spain also earned $106.5 billion from international visitors, placing it among the top earners in Europe from tourism spending. San Sebastián's annual Gastronomika congress, one of the world's most prestigious culinary congresses, features presentations and cooking demonstrations by renowned chefs, and is held in a city known for its high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants.

Ranker's crowd-sourced rankings, voted on by tens of thousands of users, currently place Italy, Mexico, and Greece as the top three countries with the best food globally. Greece scored 4.64 in TasteAtlas's 2024 rankings, landing the second spot with its bold, fresh flavors. Greek cuisine is all about simplicity done right - rich moussaka, juicy souvlaki, crisp salads with creamy feta, and flaky spanakopita. It's comfort food that still feels light and vibrant, packed with olive oil, herbs, and fresh ingredients. Portugal carved out a strong third place as well, placing third in TasteAtlas's 2024 rankings with a score of 4.61, where fresh seafood and hearty stews sit alongside irresistible pastéis de nata, and classics like bacalhau and caldo verde prove that simple ingredients can be pure magic.

China scored 4.59 in TasteAtlas's 2024 rankings, with bold, spicy dishes from Sichuan to the delicate, balanced plates of Jiangsu and Zhejiang - whether it's crispy Peking duck, steaming dumplings, or a bubbling hotpot, the options feel limitless. Indonesia secured sixth place in the TasteAtlas rankings with a rating of 4.57, making it the only Southeast Asian cuisine to crack the top ten. The vibrant blend of flavors influenced by the archipelago's cultural heritage is evident in dishes like rendang, nasi goreng, and satay, characterized by aromatic spices and fresh ingredients. Each of these five countries represents a distinct culinary universe - proof that exceptional food culture is far from a regional phenomenon, but a truly global one.
