Your Instant Pot is for a LOT more than just getting dinner on the table FAST! But it is also an excellent way to make moist cakes and delicious desserts. Can you get any easier than this? Just dump, stir, dump, stir, pour, and GO! It's really that easy!
I love simple recipes like this because I don't always have time to make everything from scratch. Some of our other favorites are my pressure cooker French Toast and my Caramel Apple Dip.

🧾Substitutions
- Butter cake mix - If you don't have butter cake mix, you can whip it up at home with a few simple steps. You can use my Classic White Cake Mix to start. Once you have prepared your white cake mix, place all of the ingredients into a standing mixer and combine on medium for 1 min.
- If you find that you don't have slices of pineapple, chunks will work just as well.
🥄 Variations
- For anyone who prefers to not have cherries in this recipe, that's okay! This recipe can be made without them.
- To add extra spice or flavor to a dump cake, I like to add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ of nutmeg.
🍶 Storing
To store the cake in the fridge, place it in an airtight container and it should last 5 to 7 days.
This recipe can be stored in the freezer. You will need to make sure that it is properly stored and if so, can be stored for up to 3 months in the freezer.
🍽Equipment
For this recipe, I like to use my 6-quart Instant Pot Duo.
🔎Top Tips
Here are a great set of tips that I love to follow when making any kind of instant pot dump cake recipe:
- I like to tilt the plate around every few minutes to allow the cake to absorb the juices and make sure to get all the sugary sweetness infused into the cake.
- I like to buy two boxes of cake mix so I can make two batches with each can of cherry pie filling and crushed pineapple I have. You'll only need a half can of each for one dump cake! You can also bake them both at the same time with this Stackable Stainless Steel Steamer Insert Pans with Sling!
❔FAQ
This cake is similar to that of an upside-down cake, but not exactly the same. Upside-down cake is more of a flipped cake whereas a dump cake is basically dumping all your ingredients into the pot and cooking.
I have found that a 7 or 8-inch pan works the best for this recipe. Although, this will depend on the type of instant pot you have.
